Dr. Connie Barroso (Garcia) is an Assistant Professor of Developmental Sciences in the Department of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University. She received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Florida State University.
In her work, Dr. Barroso investigates beliefs, emotions, and attitudes in the domain of mathematics and the role of these factors in math cognition, achievement, and pathways into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) career fields. She studies the development of these factors in samples of learners in middle childhood through young adulthood. Her goal is to contribute knowledge that elucidates the development and consequences of math affect to improve math-related educational and career outcomes overall.
Her research includes investigations of:
- Affective factors: Math Intelligence mindset, math anxiety, math interest and confidence
- Influences: Math affect and behaviors of parents and teachers; messages in the environment; math-related social media posts and interactions
- Outcomes: educational achievement and motivation, STEM career interests
- Development: middle childhood, adolescence, young adulthood
