Nguyen Nguyen
Assistant Professor
Dr. Nguyen Nguyen, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas Tech University, with advanced training and certification in Psychological Methods and Analysis. He is also a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Texas.

Dr. Nguyen’s research centers on advancing health equity among racially and ethnically marginalized communities, with a particular focus on chronic pain and integrated behavioral health care. His work examines the intersection of social, emotional, and physical pain, illustrating how interpersonal, cultural, and structural forces shape pain experiences, communication, and access to effective care. He is especially interested in identifying psychosocial and contextual factors that both facilitate resilience and perpetuate disparities in pain assessment, treatment, and outcomes.

More recently, Dr. Nguyen’s scholarship has expanded to explore the emerging role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in chronic pain experiences, health beliefs, care-seeking behaviors, and health-related outcomes. Through mixed-methods and community-informed approaches, his work bridges health psychology, pain research, and technology in service of health equity.

Beyond research, teaching and mentorship lie at the heart of Dr. Nguyen’s professional identity. As a core faculty member in the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program, he trains future health service psychologists to become rigorous thinkers, ethical practitioners, and socially responsive scholars. He directs the Health, Empowerment, and Advocacy (HEAL) Lab, a collaborative research community of approximately 15 graduate and undergraduate research assistants, engaged in chronic pain, health psychology, and equity-focused scholarship. The lab is grounded in values of care, collaboration, and collective learning, with an emphasis on developing scholars who lead with both rigor and humanity.
